Common Vaccine Injuries

• Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration (SIRVA). This type injury is related to the manner in which the vaccination was administered and commonly involves adhesive capsulitis, bursitis, tendonitis, as well as nerve damage, impingement and rotator cuff damage.
• Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). This injury involves an immune response in which the body attacks its nerves resulting often in numbness and tingling in the upper and lower extremities, often moving toward the abdomen and affecting breathing. GBS can cause temporary and permanent paralysis.
• Anaphylaxis. This is an allergic reaction that often requires emergent care but can result in permanent injury. It typically involves rashes, hives, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing and can, if untreated, cause cardiorespiratory failure.
